5 Thermostat Programming Tips to Help You Save Energy
Saving energy is an important part of lowering your utility bills while still keeping your Hillsborough, North Carolina, home comfortable. A great way to control energy use, especially with winter coming, is to use a programmable thermostat. From choosing the best device to creating the perfect schedule, effective thermostat programming can result in significant energy savings.
Programming Tips
When setting your thermostat for the winter, you can follow these energy saving tips to reduce the cost of your utility bills.
- The U.S. Department of Energy, recommends setting the thermostat no higher than 68 degrees. This will leave your home at a comfortable temperature. During the day, you can help to increase warmth in some rooms by opening your drapes and blinds and letting in the sun.
- When you’re not home, set the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees. This will help you to save on your energy bills. The temperature will still be warm enough to protect the pipes in your home.
- At night, or when you’re going to bed, set the temperature between five and seven degrees lower than your daytime temperature. You can improve comfort by dressing appropriately and using blankets.
- If you expect to be away for an extended period, set your thermostat at 55 degrees. This temperature is high enough to prevent your pipes from freezing and will allow you to save energy.
Easy Temperature Management
To account for temperature fluctuations while you’re away from home, some thermostats can even make automatic adjustments. You will, therefore, be able to control the indoor environment and prevent energy waste. You won’t have to worry about regulating or finding the best temperature. The more your system has to work to maintain the thermostat’s settings, the more energy it will need to use.
A programmable thermostat will help you to save money if you follow these tips. Are you ready for a smart or programmable thermostat? Perhaps you need additional information about how these devices work. Contact Warren-Hay Mechanical at 919-251-5615 to check out your options.
