Inexpensive Ways to Keep Cool This Summer
As the Carrboro, North Carolina, area continues to heat up, many people dread receiving their electric bill. One of the best ways to save money is with a programmable thermostat. You’ll get maximum benefits when you set it as close to the outdoor temperature as possible. However, this might not always be practical. Here are a few inexpensive ways you can keep cool and save energy.
Stay Hydrated and Cool at Home
Dehydration and heat stroke are common during the summer months. Make sure your family keeps refreshed throughout the day:
- Keep water bottles and ice packs in the freezer.
- Use ceiling fans to help circulate air from the AC.
- Use window shades, blinds, or curtains to block the sunlight.
Make sure you have plenty of fruits on hand. It’s not a bad idea to chill them in the refrigerator, too. Check out cooling pillows that take away some of the heat at bedtime, and toss the comforters and heavy linen.
Adjust Activities
During summer, it’s a good idea to change the way you carry out certain tasks. To keep the heat out of the house, opt for meals that don’t require a lot of cooking time. It’s also best to do laundry late at night or early in the morning when it’s a little cooler. You don’t want your dryer adding heat to an already hot house.
To save energy and still keep kids cool, it’s not a bad idea to head to the library or check out a movie. If you’re out and about, don’t forget to make sure everyone stays hydrated.
Maintain Your AC
Preventive maintenance is a great way to keep your AC in good condition to tackle the summer heat. Make sure to keep up with your annual appointments. Check the air filter and replace it if needed.
