Reduce the Risk of an AC Breakdown This Summer

When the temperatures rise and the humidity levels increase in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the last thing you want to worry about is your air conditioner breaking down. By taking a few steps before the summer hits, you can reduce the risk of an AC breakdown.

Schedule a Seasonal Tune-up

The best way to protect your AC system from a breakdown is to keep up with regular maintenance. You should have your AC system maintained each spring. During an air conditioning tune-up, an HVAC service technician:

  • Checks the refrigerant levels.
  • Tests the airflow and cooling ability of the unit.
  • Inspects all key components to make sure everything is operating properly.

If something isn’t working or needs replacement, the service technician can talk to you about options to resolve the issues right away. As a result, you’ll keep your system operating efficiently all summer long.

Replace Your Air Filter Regularly

Changing the air filter is another maintenance task that you shouldn’t skip. When the air conditioning system operates, the air flows through a filter that traps contaminants and keeps them from settling in the unit.

When the filter clogs, it can’t do its job, resulting in poor efficiency and energy waste. As a result, the system has to work harder to produce and move cool air, which increases the risk of a breakdown. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the filter every one to three months.

Clear Around the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit needs plenty of space around it to run efficiently. Check the outdoor unit regularly for any debris or blockages. Landscaping shouldn’t grow too close to the unit as it can cause blockages that decrease airflow. Make sure the housing is free of any yard debris, such as lawn clippings or leaves. Having the area clear is also helpful for when your HVAC service technician needs to inspect the unit.
