4 Winter Problems That Could Cause Heating Issues
Winter in Chapel Hill, NC, differs from one year to the next. Some seasons bring severe snow storms, start early or last longer. It’s important to understand the factors that affect your heating system so you can stay comfortable in any weather.
Freezing Temperatures
As the temperature outside dips lower, pipes and outdoor HVAC components can freeze over. Frozen pipes can burst, and your heat pump may stop working. Both the coils and fans of your heat pump’s outdoor unit can fall victim to freezing temperatures if the automatic defrost feature stops working. Once they’re frozen, your heat pump may not turn on at all. Schedule a tuneup to ensure all components of your heating system are in good working order.
Debris Buildup
Various parts of your heating system can fail due to blockages or debris accumulation. An obstructed ventilation system, for instance, can cause carbon monoxide to build up inside your home. A heat pump that won’t turn on could be caused by a fan or coil that’s been blocked by debris or icy precipitation. Dirty or blocked ductwork can cause uneven heating as your heater struggles to deliver air throughout your home. Our service techs will thoroughly inspect and clean the heating system to prevent these problems.
Dirty Air Filters
Dirty filters affect heating efficiency. The flow of air coming from your vents may not be as strong or as warm as usual. You may notice higher energy bills or more indoor air quality issues. Your heater may even shut off altogether. Remember to change or clean your air filter regularly.
Drafty Rooms
Winter can also draw attention to problems with your home’s thermal envelope. Gaps and cracks around your doors and windows affect heating system efficiency. Your heater will have to work harder to maintain a comfortable environment. Seal air leaks with caulk and weatherstripping to improve comfort and stop energy waste.
